Good conversation rarely depends on having the perfect story ready. Often, it begins when someone feels there is enough room to answer honestly and in their own way.

Choose curiosity over a checklist

Questions such as “What has been taking up your attention lately?” invite more than a yes or no. Ask one thing, then listen to the full answer instead of preparing the next prompt. A short pause can signal that the other person does not need to rush.

Follow what matters to them

Notice the detail they return to and ask about that, rather than steering the conversation toward your own experience. If they seem hesitant, leave space. Interest feels most generous when it is paired with respect for privacy.

Let small exchanges count

Not every conversation needs to become profound. Shared laughter, a practical update or a few attentive minutes can be meaningful on its own. The goal is not to extract a revelation; it is to be present.
