Time can pass for ordinary reasons: work, caregiving, stress, changed routines or simple distraction. Reaching out does not need to begin with guilt.
Start where you are
Name the gap briefly, then share why the person came to mind. “It has been a while, and I would be glad to hear how you are” is honest without placing blame.
Make the invitation light
Suggest one manageable option, such as a short call or coffee near their neighborhood, while making it clear there is no pressure. The other person may need time or may prefer not to reconnect.
Let the next chapter be new
Do not expect the friendship to resume in exactly the same form. Curiosity about who you have each become can be more generous than trying to recreate the past.
